LOCATION

Troon lies on the Ayrshire coast about 10 miles north of Ayr between Prestwick and the new town of Irvine. It is only 10 minutes from Prestwick Airport and 45 minutes from Glasgow by train. There are good road connections to Glasgow and the south and a ferry connection to Larne in Northern Ireland from Troon harbour.

DIRECTIONS

1. From Troon Station

Come out of the station and turn south in the direction of Ayr (sea on your right hand side). At the bottom of the hill turn right into Victoria Drive. No. 31 is the first red sandstone house on the right.

2. From Prestwick Airport – driving

Come out of the airport and turn right (north) on to the A79 dual carriageway signposted Kilmarnock and Glasgow.

At the first roundabout continue straight ahead on the A79 and in less than half a mile turn left on the B749 signposted ‘Troon’. Follow the winding road until it comes down towards the sea and turns sharply to the right (at Royal Troon Golf Clubhouse) to run parallel with the sea shore. Victoria Drive is then the third side street on the right. Come up Victoria Drive stopping at the main road (Bentinck Drive) and then continue until you reach number 31 - the last red sandstone house on the left, just before going under the railway bridge.

3. From Prestwick Airport – by train

Follow the walkway signposted to the train station and go over the railway to the platform for Glasgow. Trains run approximately every half hour usually 10 minutes to the hour and 21 minutes past the hour. Troon station is the first station stop towards Glasgow. From Troon station follow the directions in 1 above. Keep your airline ticket or web booking printout to obtain half price fares on the train.

4. From the Irish Ferry Terminal – driving

At the exit from the ferry terminal turn left (north) along Port Ranald Drive. Continue approximately 500 yards until you come to Morrison’s supermarket and petrol filling station on the right. At the roundabout turn right and continue for approximately 200 yards to the T junction controlled by traffic lights. Turn right into Portland Street and then immediately left into Church Street. Continue straight on for about half a mile while Church Street broadens out to become Bentinck Drive. Victoria Drive crosses Bentinck Drive immediately after the bowling green and tennis courts on the right hand side. ( the fourth street along from Portland Street). Turn left into Victoria Drive and No. 31 is the last red sandstone house on the left before the railway bridge.

5. From the south – driving

Driving north on the M6 cross the Scottish border on to the M74 and continue north until junction 12 signposted A70 Ayr. Follow the A70 towards Ayr for about 40 miles through Douglas, Muirkirk, Cumnock and Coylton until, approaching Ayr, you pass Dobbies Garden Centre (small roundabout) on the right hand side. In about 400 yards at a large roundabout turn right on to the A77 Ayr bypass signposted for Prestwick Airport, Kilmarnock and Glasgow. Continue along the A77 for approximately 4 miles and at the third roundabout continue straight on for Prestwick Airport, Irvine, and Troon on the A78. At the next roundabout again go straight on for Prestwick Airport and Troon but prepare to make an early right turn across the dual carriageway signposted B749 to Troon. Then follow the directions in 2 above into Troon and No. 31 Victoria Drive.

6. From the north and east – driving

Come through Glasgow on the M8 and take the M77 for Kilmarnock, Ayr, and Prestwick Airport. Continue on the M77 past Kilmarnock heading for Ayr. The road changes to the A77 dual carriageway signposted Ayr, Prestwick Airport, and Stranraer. Approximately 7 miles after passing the last Kilmarnock exit (also signposted for Dumfries and Edinburgh) the road descends a long straight towards the sea. At the roundabout turn right on the A78 for Prestwick Airport and Irvine. In approximately half a mile at the next roundabout go straight on for the A79 Prestwick Airport and Troon. – prepare to make an early right turn across the dual carriageway on to the B749 signposted Troon. Then follow the directions in 2 above.

7. From Glasgow Airport – by train

From outside the airport terminal building take the bus to Paisley Gilmour Street station (10 minutes). In the station follow the signs to the Ayr platform. All the electric trains to Ayr (every half hour at 11 minutes past the hour and 19 minutes to the hour) stop at Troon station. There are about 4 diesel trains each day to Stranraer through Ayr which do not stop at Troon. Alight at Troon station and follow the directions in 1 above.

8. From Glasgow Airport – driving

Follow the airport exit signs and take the M8 towards Glasgow. In approximately 3 miles take the exit left for Prestwick Airport. Follow the signs through the Glasgow suburbs for Prestwick Airport for approximately 2 miles until you join the M77. Then follow the directions in 6 above.

9. From the Arran Ferry at Ardrossan – driving

Follow the signs for Irvine and Ayr to the A78 and follow the A78 (mostly dual carriageway) south past Irvine until immediately after passing a large paper mill on your left you come to a roundabout signposted for the P&O ferry to N Ireland, Barassie, and Troon. Follow the signs towards the P&O ferry terminal until you turn sharply to the left to run along parallel to Barassie shore. After approximately one mile turn left at the roundabout next to Morrison’s petrol filling station and supermarket. Continue for 200 yards to the T junction and turn right into Portland Street and then immediately left into Church Street. Continue along Church Street while it broadens out to become Bentinck Drive. Turn left into Victoria Drive immediately after passing the bowling green and tennis courts on the right hand side of Bentinck drive. (fourth street on left from entering Church Street.) Number 31 is the last red sandstone house on the left before the railway bridge.

10. From the Arran Ferry at Ardrossan – by train

Take the train for Glasgow as far as Kilwinning and change to the Ayr line. The electric trains for Ayr through Kilwinning run every half hour. Take the train for Ayr and alight at Troon station (next after Barassie). Follow the directions in 1 above.
